Amir’s hands were sweaty, he was swaying on his feet, and his heart was pounding. Yet he wasn’t even the one getting married. He’d been through this before and hadn’t felt this nervous. His wedding had been every bit as grand and well attended, with almost the same press interest, but he’d felt in control then. With a life mapped out before him, marrying the right woman and securing his rightful place in the royal family. It was all a lie of course, but he hadn’t realised at the time it was all part of trying to be the perfect son and prince. Now he had no idea what the future held for him or Farah.

If anything this past year had helped him understand why Raed had planned to abandon his position once upon a time. It was too much pressure. Especially now he had Farah to think about. There was nothing more important to him than her welfare. That was why he hadn’t pursued Isolde any further when she’d pushed him away, even though he’d wanted to. He knew spending time with Fahid was difficult, it was for him too for different reasons. All he’d done was try and reach out to her, to offer some support, but it was clear she didn’t want anything to do with him any more. It was probably for the best when anything more between them than Farah’s welfare would be sure to end in tears.

‘Are they coming yet?’ Raed whispered to him, his eyes trained firmly on the front of the church, showing great restraint.

Amir cast a glance over his shoulder as the organ began to play. ‘They’re beautiful.’

Soraya looked stunning as she made her way towards them, her veil coyly covering her face, her body sheathed in silk. But it was her bridesmaids who’d captured his attention first. Isolde was pushing Farah’s wheelchair, which had been wrapped in ribbon and flowers, both wearing full-length pale green dresses that perfectly matched the colour of his tunic. It was the first time he’d been allowed to see what they’d been working so hard on and he was astounded by what they’d produced.

The pair had enjoyed keeping their secrets, giggling and whispering on those evenings when Isolde had come over and shared dinner with them. The only clues he’d garnered were the fabric samples he’d found on occasion, offcuts from where Isolde had altered the dresses after one of their fittings. The surprise was worth the wait. They both looked incredible, and so happy. He knew Farah wanted to keep her legs covered to hide the scars she’d been left with since the accident, but Isolde had opted to wear the same design, probably so she wouldn’t feel self-conscious. If he’d thought he wouldn’t make a spectacle of himself he’d have run over and hugged them both, he was so proud. Instead, all he could do was smile as they came to stand across the aisle from him and Raed. Isolde smiled back at him.
